Excel #SPILL!, #REF!, and #N/A: Restore a Model Without Hiding the Problem

Three common Excel errors tell different stories. #SPILL! means a dynamic formula cannot expand into its required range. #REF! means a formula points to a location that is no longer valid.

Three common Excel errors tell different stories. #SPILL! means a dynamic formula cannot expand into its required range. #REF! means a formula points to a location that is no longer valid. #N/A usually means a lookup found no match, but does not reveal whether the cause is a missing source, format, space, or bad identifier.

Do not begin with IFERROR that turns everything into zero. Find the first cell creating the error and keep a copy of the data. For #SPILL!, check for filled cells, a table, or merged cells blocking the range. For #REF!, locate the deleted column or sheet and repair the reference. For #N/A, inspect both sides of the identifier for trimming, text versus number format, and unmatched values.

After repair, add a business check: count customers without prices, the value of unmatched rows, and whether the formula removes or adds records. Keep errors visible in an exceptions report; only a known and expected value should be handled deliberately.
