A failed WhatsApp message is not necessarily a wrong phone number. Check six things in order: number in international format, consent and conversation status, message type, template ID when required, platform response, and whether the failed event is sending or delivery. A successful send does not prove the customer saw it.

Retain an internal message ID, provider ID, customer, purpose, text version, status, and update time. That makes cross-system comparison possible without copying sensitive conversation content into reports. Do not retry aggressively; duplicate messages can cause complaints and damage customer experience.

When the action matters, design an approved alternative route, such as an agent task or email where there is consent. The failure should open a case with full context, not merely show failed and disappear into a log.
