Common PCN874 Import Errors and How to Prevent Them Before Submission

An import failure in a reporting file means that something does not align between the data your system generated and the rules expected by the receiving service. Before looking for a quick fix, identify the failing stage: source-data creation, transformation into the file structure, upload, authentication, or service validation.

The prevention method is not to retain an old file that happened to work. Build pre-flight checks into the system. An export should stop when a reporting period is missing, figures do not reconcile to the defined control source, or values required by the current specification are absent.

Prefer an exception screen to a generic error

Before download or transmission, show the user the included and rejected record count, totals by action type and period, missing fields or failed validations, an export ID that supports reproduction, and a downloadable exception report for finance.

After a rejected submission, preserve the exact response text, action ID, and attempt time. Correct the source record, run the checks again, and generate a new version. Do not add automatic retries until the specific route has been checked for partial or duplicate-submission behavior.
