Subscriptions and Recurring Billing: What Happens When a Card Fails or a Plan Changes Mid-Month

A subscription is more than a recurring payment. Define start date, billing cycle, plan, agreed price, charge attempt, grace period, pause, cancellation, credit, and plan change.

A subscription is more than a recurring payment. Define start date, billing cycle, plan, agreed price, charge attempt, grace period, pause, cancellation, credit, and plan change. Without clear states, a customer can receive service without payment or be charged after cancellation.

Keep a separate event for each charge attempt and link it to subscription, invoice, and gateway response. A plan change does not edit history; it is recorded as effective from a defined date with a proportional rule where applicable. When a charge fails, send an appropriate notice, retry only under policy, and route to human handling when needed.

Before launch, test sign-up, failure, card update, pause, cancellation, and return. A subscriptions screen should give staff and customer an explanation, not only an active field.
