ERP Module or Custom Development: Decide by Exceptions, Ownership, and Upgrade Path

An ERP module generally fits when the process resembles a flow the system supports and the business can adopt its working rules.

An ERP module generally fits when the process resembles a flow the system supports and the business can adopt its working rules. Custom development fits a clear unique need not solved with configuration, report, or connection. Trouble begins when every exception is bypassed with small code until no one knows what is supported.

For each option document requirement fit, process change, maintenance, permissions, tests, upgrade impact, and export ability. Demonstrate an exception as well as the happy path. Custom code needs owner, documentation, tests, and controlled release just like a separate system.

Sometimes the right choice is neither module nor code: data correction or procedure. Selection should reduce operational risk, not only tick a feature request.
